What is LVT flooring?

Luxury vinyl tile, also commonly referred to as LVT or smooth vinyl flooring, is a man-made flooring solution that is built with multiple layers and has a waterproof construction. LVT flooring often looks like real wood or stone flooring, and can also have designs printed on it to complement the decor of the surrounding environment.

LVT features a printed decor between various layers of vinyl. The top layer of vinyl has a durable and scratch-resistant surface, and the base layer is much thicker and provides structural support. Its multi-layer composition makes the floor durable and resistant to water, ideal for a range of commercial environments.

What are the benefits of LVT?

LVT flooring offers a number of benefits, predominantly its excellent durability and minimal residual indentation due to its protective coating layer. Other benefits include:

How durable is LVT flooring?

Luxury vinyl tiles are incredibly durable and hard wearing due to their multi-layer construction. They are more robust compared to other types of flooring, such as wood or tile flooring, which can become worn very quickly. LVT flooring is waterproof and does not dent as easily as wooden flooring.

  • Easy installation – Vinyl flooring is much quicker to install compared to ceramic, wood or stone flooring and can be installed over concrete subfloors.
  • Insulates sound – LVT flooring is significantly quieter to walk on compared to laminate, tiles and wood flooring. With an average thickness of 2mm, LVT subdues the sound that comes from people walking on the floor.
  • Low maintenance – Looking after LVT flooring is simple, and also allows you to vigorously clean due to its protective layer. A simple cleaning regime, with a wet mop, is usually suitable though for maintaining the hygiene of your commercial flooring.
  • Longer lifespan – LVT flooring generally has a longer lifespan compared to laminate or tile flooring, with a life expectancy of about 15 years, but can often last much longer. The lifespan of LVT flooring is dependent on traffic levels.
  • Versatility – LVT flooring is hard-wearing, waterproof and provides an excellent level of slip-resistance, making it ideal for high-risk environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Warmth – Due to the thickness of LVT flooring, added warmth is provided underfoot with the additional benefit of a cushioned feel as you walk. LVT is also compatible with underfloor heating.
